When Caramel Apples Go Bad, or Autumnal Thoughts in Vegas
Indulging in seasonal urges: sometimes a good idea, sometimes not so much...fruitcake, eggnog, Cadbury Eggs, those malted eggs that turn your mouth blue...things you wouldn't normally consider the rest of the year. The impending autumn (and I say impending because it was still 80 degrees on Halloween) and the lack of Halloween events (no Halloween Critical Mass, no Castro Street) brought on the interesting replacement activity of making caramel apples! Yes, slightly septuagenarian, but that means I have 40 more years to perfect the art. Or maybe I should quit now.
I liked the rustic look of the apples, freshly dipped and artlessly smashed with peanuts. Not 10 mintues after creating the apples, they became a gooey, melted mess. As I mentioned previously, Las Vegas wasn't exactly chilly on this day, and I didn't realize that a refrigerator would've help maintain shape.
Some things, like sandwiches, are better messy, yes? We cut the apples into quarters and ate them more like pre-dipped fondue. Honestly, I was a little more excited to get to the Granny Smith Apple beneath the sugar.
